The Yoruk Markets
The
weekly market in Egirdir is every Thursday, but from the end of July to
the middle of October, there are markets every Sunday for the yoruk people
of the mountain village. The Yoruks come to Egirdir to sell their apples,
goats and yogurt, and to buy supplies for the winter. It’s an important
opportunity for people from different villages to meet and mix. These
markets are held for 10 Sundays in a row. On the Saturday before the last
Sunday market, when the trading is nearly done, there is a market attended
only by women. On this day, mothers with sons of marriageable age approach
the mothers of acceptable potential daughters-in-law to make an offer
to those families. If all goes well with the prospective bride and groom,
the marriage can go ahead in the spring of the following year.
